The photographic medium allowed me to fix the impermanent beauty of this accidental still life, calling forth the fragility of life we are all subject to. As you read this statement, the drowned nestling has fully decomposed, and the dragonflies have passed away, but the water continues to flow. The nestling took on a different shape, bearing witness to life once more as the next generation of dragonflies hovers above it. The title refers to the vanitas painting by Dutch painter Pieter Claesz, which allowed me to not only recognise the moment before the photograph was made but also to continue the conversation within the genre.
